Thanks to everyone for the contributions. I was able to build Erlang in 64-bit with the configuration below. Note that make clean wasn't enough. I had to reinflate the tarball and start again.

Sadly the Erlang build leaves a lot of build by-products lying around even after a make clean. Restarting from a fresh tarball expansion is your best bet.
